On Saturday, the group mounted another expedition, this time to the Oaks area, where Sawney grew up and received his first schooling at the Bingham School.

The first stop was at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, where Sawney's parents Alexander and Cornelia ("Addie") are buried (the two gravestones below).

The two Susan Webbs in our group (Ries, l., and Price, r.) joined hands in sisterhood with Sawney's sister Susan (Sunie). Below is the gravestone of Sawney's sister Henrietta. Also shown are the refreshments (these are hospitable people!) provided in the church social hall by the Mann, McIver, and Lashley relatives who greeted us there.

Above is the most complete picture of the reunion group, assembled at the house which now stands at the site of Sawney's boyhood home, just down the hill from the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. To the right is the view back up the hill to the church and graveyard, above the car and between the trees.

Very close to the church and Sawney's home is the old Bingham School, which Sawney attended and which was the reason for the family's move south. Above are the plaques denoting the historic status of the building, now operated as a gracious inn. Below is a look at the original log cabin construction of the building. At the left below, the visiting Webbs listen to Bingham Inn owner Jacques du Pres describe the work of renovation.

Finally, we visited the home of Jean and Eddie Mann, a farmhouse from the 1870s, which has also been lovingly renovated.

The Manns provided another museum-quality display of pictures and furniture (and refreshments!). The chest below is said to have belonged to Sawney's mother, Cornelia.

One culmination of the reunion was the barbecue dinner at the Camp Saturday night, to which we invited the local North Carolina relatives that we knew about. About twenty of them were able to join us. At the right, the group gathers under the Pavilion roof, while the storm gathers force right outside. It was a wild evening with thunder, lightning, wind, and rain, all of which merely emphasized the family warmth and friendship of the group under the roof.

After dinner, while the storm raged, we heard reminiscences about Sawney and other family members. One star of the evening was Dr. Bailey Webb who had many stories and remembrances from her youth. The latter part of the evening was spent in introducing family groups and helping both the North Carolinians and the visitors to understand how their extended family fits together.

Sunday Morning (no pictures taken), the group gathered in Dogwood for a remembrance of Florence Zimmerman, Mieko Terhune, and Thompson Webb, Jr. Later, the group lingered over lunch in the dining hall and discussed the question of future reunions. A number of possibilities were discussed, mostly along the line of sites that depart from having family connections such as those for the last five reunions have had. No conclusions were reached, but there were volunteers to be on the committee that will continue to think about what kind of reunion to hold in 2004 and where.
