On Friday morning, a caravan of cars and minivans set out for the Person County birthplace of Sawney Webb. The house is still there, just south of Surl, although it has recently been substantially renovated.

The current owners of the house, and kin themselves, are Mitchell and Bobbie Moore. They made a tremendous effort to welcome and entertain the Webb gang, inviting several other members of the Moore clan to visit with us. They invited us into the house, fed us, and shared their collection of memorabilia. The picture at left, taken in the 1970s, is of the original house before renovation.

About three miles away is the home built by Stephen Moore in 1776 and extensively renovated over the last 15 years (at left). One vanfull visited the Moore home on Saturday. After the wonderful visit to Sawney's first home, and making the acquaintance of several relatives, we moved to the nearby Mt. Tirzah Methodist Church, which had been made available to us as a place to rest and eat the lunches packed for us at the camp (2 pictures below).

Friday afternoon several people made a visit to the University of North Carolina. The larger group visited the collection of material about Sawney Webb and Stephen Moore in the Southern Historical Collection of the UNC Library.

Another group, led by UNC alum Bill Webb, visited Old East, the dormitory where both Sawney and Bill lived while at UNC (though at different times), and other important venues of student life. Old East is now used for University adminstration.

Back at Camp New Hope Friday evening, we had dinner at the camp dining hall, and then gathered back at Dogwood for more conversation.

The evening ended with a surprise celebration of Bill Webb's 80th birthday, Tom and Joan's 32nd anniversary, and a number of other notable events.
