Matt, Jeff, Larry, and Sandy visited Alaska from July 23 to August 3, 2004.
We set out driving on the George Parks Highway north from Anchorage on 7/24, spending that night and the next in Healy, near the entrance to Denali National Park. On 7/25, we did some hiking in Denali and took an afternoon bus excursion. On 7/26 we continued north on G. Parks to Fairbanks. The next morning, we visited with Larry's cousin Nancy and her children. In the afternoon, we hopped a mail plane to the native village of Anaktuvik Pass, on the Caribou migration path, north of the Arctic Circle. On 7/28, we drove south on the Richardson Highway, following the pipeline, and spent the night in Copper Center (a very small settlement, where, miraculously, a wireless LAN signal presented itself). On 7/29, we continued south on the Richardson Highway to the port of Valdez, and then drove back north to find the Glenn Highway and eventually Anchorage, where we had arranged to rent an apartment for the rest of our time in Alaska. 7/30 was spent resting and seeing a few sights of Anchorage. On 7/30, we drove south to the Kenai Peninsula and took a day boat trip out of Seward, touring Resurrection Bay and Aialik Bay, in which we saw the sea lions, glacier, dolphins, etc., below. 8/1 was again spent slowly in Anchorage, followed by the highlight of the trip on 8/2. That was an all day single-engine flying trip to the Katmai Peninsula and Brooks Falls, where several Brown bears were feeding on the tail end of a salmon run. We had about 4 hours at the Falls and 2 hours flying each way. What a trip!
